A little seen parliamentary question filed by Jamus Lim in 2021 is suddenly gaining new attention online.
Of all the questions filed in July’s parliamentary session, there was one that raised eyebrows. Considering all that is going on in the world, it is somewhat astonishing that Jamus Lim from the Worker’s Party (WP) would wade into the trans rights movement. In this case, by asking why public hospitals have stopped performing subsidised gender-affirming surgery. (It’s never been subsidised.)
Exactly how many of his Sengkang residents Mr Lim is speaking up for on this issue?
Safe to say, not that many. A tiny minority. And to be clear, Singapore was actually a pioneer in gender reassignment surgeries. It was also one of the first Asian countries to recognise transgender individuals. As for those suffering from gender dysphoria, there are avenues for help.
The ‘problem’ was never about healthcare. Instead, Jamus Lim is merely virtue-signalling, perpetuating a pattern of behaviour as the WP seeks to endear itself to the woke left.
Jamus’ latest dalliance into identity politics, has also thrown attention onto another question he asked in parliament in 2021.
When Singapore was still dealing with COVID, the Associate Professor decided it was a good time to lecture teachers on how they should use the preferred pronouns of their students in classrooms.
As if our educators do not have enough on their plate. Mr Lim, and by extension, the WP, seems intent on spreading the trans social contagion into our schools.
Imagine sending your children to school, only for them to come home utterly confused about which of the 72 genders that the trendier of their friends have created for themselves. Children are impressionable. They see the attention lavished on a young person with ze/zim/zir pronouns, and friendship groups falling over themselves to be supportive and wonder, I would like a bit of that attention too?
Rather than an emotional confused few, our teachers would have to cater to the names and faces of hundreds of students, since the WP expects them to keep track of pronouns to prevent the offence of ‘misgendering’.
Where does this all stop? Will Mr Lim be championing for schools to let boys wear pinafores? Why can’t a boy wear a skirt to class, one might ask? And after that?
Will Mr Lim be demanding that schools allow boys to use the girls’ toilets? Are parents going to have to accept it? That their daughter might have to change clothes in full view of boys who think they are girls?
And what is the endgame? We end up with a society renouncing both science and reason, with politicians who are unable to say that only women are born with a vagina and only men are born with penises. This isn’t fearmongering. It has actually happened. Just look at the UK and Canada.
It is one thing to celebrate diversity and inclusion. But this new woke campaign is not the same as, say the gay rights movement. One accepts basic biology, the other is a brainwashing campaign intended to force us to renounce science and basic biology, and deny the truth that we see with our own eyes.
Taken to its extreme, it becomes a sort of lunacy which brings about more problems than solutions. There are already courageous people, many of them liberal, who are pushing back against this collective insanity in those societies. JK Rowling comes to mind as the most famous of them.
Yet sadly, even as we witness the mayhem of culture wars and identity politics taking root in the West, the WP still seems intent on bringing such a plague into our society.
